Madagascar: The Streets Rise in Anger Amid Shortages

Antananarivo witnessed another day of mobilization on September, 25th as public anger grew over recurring power outages and frequent interruptions in the water supply.
Led by Generation Z, a peaceful demonstration took place in the streets of the capital. Young people called on the population to stand up for their rights in a nonviolent way. However, the gathering was soon dispersed by security forces using tear gas and stun grenades. Injuries were reported on both sides.
As the tension seemed to ease, the night turned more violent. Looters targeted several shops, supermarkets, and shopping centers across the city, leaving behind ransacked businesses and an atmosphere of fear.
These events reflect a deep-rooted frustration, fueled by economic and social hardship, but also by the determination of a young generation demanding a more dignified future.
